Collagen
Collagen is a key structural protein component of skin which gives skin its structural firmness. Collagen is damaged by factors, such as free radicals and UV light, which can lead to premature ageing with poorer skin tone and texture and loss of firmness. Collagen is also subject to intrinsic factors of aging. As we age, damaged collagen is replaced less effectively and is of reduced quality. Collagen is one of 3 key chromophores responsible for the appearance of skin. It acts as an "internal mirror" for light that passes through the skin, reflecting it back so we perceive the skin as having depth and youthful radiance.
