Animal Testing Alternatives
As for animal testing, P&G Beauty's position is clear: We do not test our beauty products on animals; nor do we ask suppliers to test them on our behalf. We do not test beauty ingredients on animals, except in rare cases when needed to meet regulatory or safety obligations.
P&G considers consumer safety a top priority. We therefore support the global cosmetic and personal care product regulations that are in place to ensure consumers are safe and feel safe when using our products. The ingredients of every cosmetic and personal care product on the market today have been thoroughly evaluated to ensure that they do not harm the consumer.
In recent decades, animal testing has been part of the safety evaluation of ingredients used in consumer products. Even if not recently tested, most ingredients that have been in use for any significant period of time have had some level of animal testing performed at some point in the past. P&G is committed to the elimination of animal testing for all components of cosmetic and personal care products. Through the collaborative work that we are doing with partners around the globe, P&G is at the forefront of non-animal alternatives development and testing worldwide. As a company, P&G has invested more than $200 million to date in helping to develop more than 50 proven alternative methods, and sharing those discoveries so that others can benefit from our progress.
We are proud of the important role we are playing in supporting efforts to eliminate all animal testing. We have assigned some of our best scientists, laboratories and significant funding toward the elimination of animal testing for more than twenty years. However, gaps still remain in scientific knowledge, indicating that we are currently unable to eliminate animal testing completely. For example, assurance of safety in some areas, such as systemic toxicity, without the use of animals still poses great scientific and technical regulatory challenges. We call upon regulators to join us in seeking a global solution: internationally agreed standards for non-animal chemicals testing, which are acceptable and applicable throughout the world.
Example of P&G Alternatives Research
As an innovative leader in science and technology, P&G Beauty acknowledges the importance of finding new ways of studying ingredient and product safety and efficacy without the use of animal testing. Dr. Rosemarie Osborne has studied the use of In Vitro Tests which are conducted ex-vivo - this can include studies within a test tube, on an artificial substrate e.g. artificial collagen or on a skin equivalent model created from skin cells. human skin and cornea equivalents not only for assessing the potential irritant responses of skin and eyes , but also as predictive tools for better understanding responses of the skin to ingredients commonly used in anti-aging and other personal care products.
